Census 1996 - South Africa
--------------------------

CENSUS 1996 - PRELIMINARY ESTIMATES OF THE SIZE OF SOUTH AFRICA'S
POPULATION

The preliminary estimates of Census '96 conducted by the Central
Statistical Service (CSS) show that there were 37,9 million people in South
Africa on the night of 9-10 October 1996. This total has been adjusted for
"under-count", using a special post-enumeration survey. Of this total, 18,2
million (48%) were males and 19,7 million (52%)
were females.

The purpose of issuing preliminary estimates is to make selected summary
data available as quickly as possible. In South Africa, decision-makers
have lacked reliable demographic information on which to base their plans,
especially during the last twenty years under apartheid when statistics for
the former Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda and Ciskei (TBVC states) were
hived off.

Fresh empirical evidence of the numbers and location of people was urgently
required, especially for financial planning. Hence these preliminary
estimates of population size have been issued by the CSS. The remaining
census information, including employment, education, health, housing, etc.,
will be available in early 1998. It is possible that the final estimate of
the size of the population will differ slightly from the preliminary
estimate.
