Contraceptive implants and lactation
------------------------------------
I am working on a literature review on use of contraceptive implants
(Norplant) during breast-feeding for an article in a bulletin which
goes to women's health organizations internationally. I have noticed a
few examples of differences between countries in prescribing and
patient information, ranging from a general statement warning against
use of any hormonal contraceptive during lactation to recommendations
for use from six weeks postpartum onwards, unaccompanied by warnings
or a specific mention of the presence of the drug in breast milk (the
latter was in patient information).
If Norplant is marketed in your country, can you let me know the
information provided on use during lactation, for either prescribers,
patients or both? Do you have any information about how widespread use
is during lactation?
If you send this information to me directly, I will collect it and
post a summary to all list members.
Thank you in advance for your help!
With best regards,
Barbara Mintzes
