Female Genital Mutilation (3)
-----------------------------
[Even though this response is directed at Prof. Mwaluko, we think it will be of interest to other list members. B.P.]
Dear Prof. Mwaluko,
Regarding your request for information on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM):
The Population Council has been working with ministries of health and non-governmental organizations to change the practice of FGM in North and West Africa. We have just written an article on our research and work for the next issues of our research newsletter, Population Briefs. I have added your name to our mailing list.
If you would like to communicate directly with Council staff working on this problem, contact:
Ian Askew,
Project Director,
Africa Operations Research/Technical Assistance,
Population Council,
Multichoice Towers, Upper Hill,
P.O.Box 17643,
Nairobi,
Kenya
tel. +254 2 726958, 68, 16, 88.
fax +254 2 713479
Ian would be able to provide you with reports prepared for the program. I don't know if anyone has a definition of FGM agreeable to all: our Cairo office calls it FGM, but our Mali people call it female circumcision. We tend to prefer FGM.
I hope our work will be helpful to your efforts.
