Malaria and Agriculture - A call for research partners
------------------------------------------------------
The CGIAR Systemwide Initiative on Malaria and Agriculture
An invitation to research institutes, malaria control programs, NGOs
and community initiatives to design the research program on malaria
and agriculture
* What is the impact of malaria on farming communities in sub-Saharan
Africa and Asia?
* How can better agro-ecosystem management control and reduce ma-
laria?
* Which research institutes, NGOs and national organizations are in-
terested in participating in a new malaria-agriculture research ini-
tiative?
The research centers of the CGIAR system are planning a new initia-
tive, which aims to improve the understanding of the links between
malaria and agriculture - the Systemwide Initiative on Malaria and
Agriculture (SIMA).
This effort will combine the expertise of national and international
research centers with organizations active in the fight against ma-
laria. It will generate new knowledge on the interactions between
this disease and agricultural activity, and will identify malaria re-
duction options. Sub-Saharan Africa is the priority geographic focus
for SIMA.
The key objective of SIMA is to identify opportunities for minimizing
malaria risks through agriculture-based interventions. If current ef-
forts to 'roll back malaria' are to be successful, these kinds of
sustainable, environmentally-friendly activities are needed. These
approaches will integrate with existing anti-vector and malaria-
curative methods.
Help shape the SIMA research program. During the coming weeks an
electronic consultation will be held to gather input from all people
and organizations with an interest in malaria and agriculture re-
search. To join the discussion:
