New publications from the Population Council
--------------------------------------------

Family planning professionals who manage programs will have a powerful new
tool to evaluate service delivery and improve quality of care with the
publication of "The Situation Analysis Approach to Assessing Family
Planning and Reproductive Health Services: A Handbook."

The 219-page volume, compiled by Council staff and based on eight years of
operations research, is the most comprehensive guide to Situation Analysis
published to date. The handbook contains all the information needed to
conduct a Situation Analysis study. Program managers can adapt the
methodology to suit individual program needs by selecting instruments or
adding new modules that cover indicators of interest to them. A single copy
is free to professionals and students in the reproductive health field.

"What's Sex Got to Do with It? Challenges for Incorporating Sexuality into
Family Planning Programs" is a new report based on a workshop hosted by the
Council and IPPF/WHR. The meeting examined five myths that have prevented
family planning and reproductive health services from dealing directly with
issues of sexuality and gender:

1. Sexuality is a personal matter that people are unwilling to discuss.
2. Sex is a voluntary activity between individuals of equal status.
3. Clients prefer family planning methods that do not interfere with
   coitus.
4. Family planning providers are prepared to respond to clients' questions
   and needs concerning sexuality.
5. Addressing sexuality will overburden family planning programs.
