Postgraduate Public Health Training at Univ. of Western Cape

Enrol for a Distance-Learning Postgraduate Programme in Public Health
in 2001

University of the Western Cape (UWC) Public Health Programmes give
health professionals from all levels the skills to transform health
and welfare in Africa. Students can gain credits and qualifications
incrementally (potentially leading to a Masters Degree), and will be
able to enter and exit at a postgraduate Certificate or Diploma
level.

These programmes focus on:
* quantifying and prioritising health needs
* design, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive Primary
  Health Care programmes
* management of the District Health System
* health promotion applied to different settings
* health systems research
* health information systems.

Each programme is offered through distance, resource-based learning,
and scholarships are available for disadvantaged students from South
Africa.

POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN PUBLIC HEALTH

This one-year part-time programme provides a firm grounding in aca-
demic learning skills, as well as in Public Health and Primary Health
Care. It targets managers and supervisors of health and welfare ser-
vices in local authorities and at district and regional levels.

Entrance Requirements: an undergraduate Degree or Diploma in any dis-
cipline, or 3 years relevant work experience with university-approved
competence.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN PUBLIC HEALTH

This one-year part-time programme provides an in-depth study for man-
agers and supervisors of health and welfare services (in local, dis-
trict, regional and provincial levels), as well as health science
educators.

Entrance Requirements: a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Health,
or an Honours Degree or equivalent (in any discipline), or in excep-
tional cases, 5 years relevant work experience.

MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH

This 2-3 year programme consists of the Diploma modules, a mini-
thesis and specialist modules from a range of options. It is perfect
for middle and senior managers (at district, regional, provincial and
national levels) and health science educators.

Entrance Requirements: a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health, an
Honours Degree or equivalent in any discipline, or, in exceptional
cases, 5 years' relevant work experience.
