Senior Lecturer

The School of Public Health at the University of the Western Cape is a WHO Collaborating Centre, and has an international reputation as a leading research and teaching institution in Public Health. Its educational and research activities are wide-ranging, with a special focus on health systems research, primary health care, social determinants of health, priority conditions (including TB/HIV and chronic disease) and the implementation of district health systems. The School’s distance learning postgraduate programme, offered through a range of learning media, is unique in Southern Africa. It provides health and welfare personnel from developing countries, especially in Africa, with the opportunity to enhance their capacity to analyse, build and strengthen the health sector in their respective countries.

The School is seeking to fill a vacancy of Senior Lecturer in a permanent position to commence duties as soon as possible. The successful candidate will join a strong multidisciplinary team of academics, play a central role in the School’s postgraduate and short-course programmes (including Master’s, Doctoral and Postdoctoral supervision) and in leading and developing existing and new research areas in the School. Appointment to this key position requires:
• a PhD or PhD equivalent in Public Health or Social and Behavioural Sciences, or a related field
• proven expertise in one or more of the following areas, viz. epidemiology, health systems research, evidence-based practice & knowledge translation, health management, quantitative and/or qualitative research methods and/or one of the key public health programme areas
• experience in planning, conducting and leading research in public health • experience in teaching and supervising postgraduate students
• familiarity with developing research grant proposals.

A strong profile in epidemiology and quantitative research methods as well as expertise in working on the social determinants of health, and/ or experience in writing interactive learning materials and in using web- based technology to facilitate and support distance learning, will be a great advantage.
