Vacancy for Social Scientist - Mwanza HIV/STD Research Programme

We have an exciting and challenging vacancy for a social scien-
tist to join the scientific team of a research programme on the
epidemiology and control of HIV and other sexually transmitted
diseases (STD) in Mwanza, Tanzania. The successful applicant
will primarily work on a randomised controlled trial to evaluate
new vaginal microbicides that women can use to protect them-
selves from HIV infection. This research is carried out in col-
laboration with the African Medical and Research Foundation and
the National Institute for Medical Research, Tanzania. The col-
laborative research programme in Mwanza is recognised as one of
the leading international centres for HIV prevention research.
The post holder will be employed as academic staff of the London
School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and will be based full-
time in Mwanza.

Ideal applicants will have a postgraduate qualification in so-
cial science or a related discipline, practical experience of
social science research, experience of having managed a research
project, familiarity with relevant social science software, an
interest in health in developing countries, and excellent commu-
nication, organisational and language skills. The appointment
will be for one year in the first instance although further ex-
tension is possible subject to confirmation of funding. The ap-
pointment will be made on the lecturer or research fellow scales
with a starting salary between �21,010 and �31,715 depending on
qualifications and experience, plus appropriate overseas allow-
ances.
