Register now for the forthcoming World Congress of Family Doctors, to
be held on the African continent for the first time, in May this
year.
Although a conference primarily intended for general practitioners/
family doctors, the content will be of interest anyone involved in
primary health care.
Scientific Programme: The Scientific Programme is central to the con-
gress and over 800 abstracts from around the world will cover a wide
range of topics and issues for family physicians. There are 14 ple-
nary sessions covering daily themes of:
* The individual in family medicine
* The family in family medicine
* The context in family medicine
* The best available evidence
There is a special Rural and Remote Health Track, plus one on Women
in Health. Other topics include Education, HIV/AIDS, the Environment,
Nurse practitioners, Poverty, Care of the Elderly, Behavioural
Change, Informatics and Research.
Up to 39 simultaneous sessions include workshops, symposia, posters
and satellite sessions. More details can be found on the Congress web

Delegates can also register on the web site and book accommodation.
Sessions will be interactive and the congress language is English.
There will also be a major exhibition, with the latest and best for
family practice and primary health care. Delegates will be able to
experience the office and consulting room of the future, plus a range
of Information Technology to assist with all aspects of practice man-
agement.
There is no official sponsorship for delegates, but registration fees
have been kept as low as possible to keep the congress affordable.
There is also a social programme and a programme for accompanying
delegates.

WONCA stands for the "World Organisation of National Colleges, Acad-
emies and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/Family Phy-
sicians". WONCAs short name is World Organisation of Family Doctors.
WONCA is made up of national colleges, academies and organizations
concerned with the academic aspects of general family practice. Be-
ginning with 18 members in 1972, there are now in excess of 60 member
organizations in 53 countries. In all, the total membership of the
member organizations of WONCA is about 150,000 general practitio-
ners/family physicians. There are also seven international organisa-
tions in collaborative relations with WONCA (WHO, UNICEF etc).
