Young Child Feeding Documents available
---------------------------------------
Dear Colleagues,
The Support for Analysis and Research in Africa (SARA) project has re-
cently added two publications on young child feeding practices to its
list of on-line publications:
HIV and Infant Feeding: A Chronology of Research and Policy Advances
and their Implications for Programs
Designing by Dialogue: A Program Planners' Guide to Consultative Re-
search for Improving Young Child Feeding
Both are available at:

"HIV and Infant Feeding" summarises what is currently known and unknown
about the transmission of HIV through breastfeeding. Mother-to-child
transmission of HIV is now recognised as the second leading cause of
new HIV infections world-wide, after sexual contact. Although most
cases of vertical transmission occur during pregnancy and, especially,
at the time of delivery, transmission may also occur during breastfeed-
ing. This poses a dilemma for women throughout the developing world,
particularly in Africa, because of the significant nutrition, child-
spacing, disease-prevention, and child survival benefits that breast-
feeding conveys in areas with high rates of disease.
"Designing by Dialogue" is a manual that provides tools to design, im-
plement, and analyse the results of formative, consultative research
which can be used to design effective programs to improve infant and
young child feeding. This step-by-step guide describes how to define
key problems in child feeding practices; identify simple and effective
actions within the household to improve child feeding; test and analyse
these practices; and develop effective strategies to promote these
practices. The ten-chapter manual describes the different phases of the
research process and offers suggestions for using the process. A back-
ground section discusses the approach and highlights experiences from
current child feeding programs.
Hard copies of "HIV and Infant Feeding" are available free.
Hard copies of the "Designing by Dialogue" manual are available free to
practitioners and organisations in Africa and at a cost of $35 USD to
others.
