Dear Listers: Is dipyrone (analgesic) allowed in your country? Many Thanks Arturo Marti-Carvajal Venezuela Email: amarti@cid.cid.ve --- Note from the moderator: A good source to consult for this type of questions is the official "UN Consolidated List of substances that have been banned, withdrawn or restricted". A major part of this deals with pharmaceuticals. The list is available at UN-bookshops worldwide. The pharmaceuticals part is being kept up-to-date by WHO/DMP Geneva (email: dmpmail@who.ch) Does anybody know where the UN-list is available in Internet? Dipyrone has been subject to major controversies, especially because its risk of life-threatening agranulocytosis and irreversible shock. A major study on these risks (the "Boston study", 1986) was inconclusive. Most developed countries have either banned dipyrone/metamizol or restricted its indications to severe pain in cancer patients. A critical review has been published by HAI and BUKO: "Dipyrone, a drug no one needs" (available in english, german and spanish).
