Dr. Weerasuriya has raised a very important point in
the importance of location of pharmacies (called
Chemist Shops in India).
Due to licensing of too many pharmacies in the same
locality, unhealthy competition develops. One reason
for rampant supply of medicines without doctors'
prescription in India is due to such unhealthy
competition. Whenever we ask a pharmacy as to why he
is selling medicines without prescription, his
standard reply is that if he does not do so, his next
door pharmacy will supply.
