E-DRUG: donated drugs (4)
------------------------

Dear Friends,

It is not just the potency that decreases on expiration. The active
ingredient may change into some other related known / unknown chemical
moeities which may be much more toxic in micro-amounts than the parent drug.
The sterile injectables, eye drops and eye ointments may lose the sterility
as well.

Even if the the product retains its potency and there is no significant
formation of related substances, the finished drugs may also change their
physical characteristics and the release / delivery of the drug from the
dosage-form may not be uniform, regular, consistent and timely and the
Pharmacokinetics of the drug may become unpredictable, and using such
products may result in either under-dosing or gross overdosing with
cosequent serious side-effects. This will also be more expensive as this
will require more regular, strict clinical supervision.

Thanks and regards.

Sincerely,

Lokesh Madan, M.Pharm
