MEDIA ADVISORY - Press Teleconference

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria: Access to
Medicines and The First Grant Announcements

WHEN: Monday, April 22, 12-1 pm EST
HOW: Within the US: (800) 210-5592, Outside:
+1-952-556-2811 ask for Doctors Without Borders call
RSVP: (Not necessary, but appreciated): Kris Torgeson,
      212-655-3764 WHO:

--Rachel Cohen, Access to Essential Medicines Campaign Liaison,
Doctors Without Borders/Mdecins Sans Frontires (MSF)

--Dr. Bernard Pcoul, Director, Access to Essential Medicines
Campaign, Mdecins Sans Frontires (MSF)

--Paul Davis, AIDS activist, Health GAP Coalition

--Maryline Mulemba, Head of Mission, Mdecins Sans Frontires
(MSF) Malawi

--Mohammed Aowalu, Nigerian AIDS Alliance

ISSUES TO BE DISCUSSED:

--The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria Board of Directors
meeting will take place in New York City, April 22-24: what will be
announced? How did the application process take place?

--What must happen to ensure that the Fund fulfills its promise to
provide access to treatment to the millions dying of AIDS, TB, and
malaria? The Fund is tremendously short on money, and many
Board members have spoken explicitly \*against\* the value of HIV
treatment in developing countries.

--Will the Global Fund grants explicitly prioritize treatment, not only
prevention and care programs, and encourage the procurement of
the most affordable and effective drugs for HIV/AIDS, TB, and
Malaria?

--Will the Doha Declaration on TRIPS and public health be upheld
and endorsed in the funding process, or will only name-brand, more
expensive medicines be procured, as per the wishes of Big Pharma?
