E-DRUG: Omega-3-acid fish oils
------------------------------
Dear E-druggers,
On the basis of a recent systematic reviews (BMJ 2004 Jan 3;328(7430):30-5) we are elaborating an information leaflet for GPs on the effectiveness of OMEGA-3-ACID (fish oils) which are totally reimbursed by Italian Minister of Health for the indication reported below:
"hypertriglyceridaemia: to reduce the triglyceric concentration when diet and other pharmacological treatment alone have not demonstrated any clinical effects. This treatment has to be associated to adequate diet.
Secondary prevention after myocardial infarction. Is indicated to reduce the risk of mortality."
The net price 20-cap pack = 21.93 Euro
[Italian drug expenditure for this drug in the first trimester of 2004 has been 43.000.000 euro, 55% more than in the same trimester of the previous year].
My question: Are fish oils available in your countries and reimbursed by the government?
Thank you very much in advance for your kind reply
Best regards

[Omega-3-acids were recently also classified as medicines in the Netherlands (from being just "food additives"). No decision has been taken whether they will be reimbursed. WB]
