Pharmaceuticals: high level group established to look at medicines for
Europe

Work on a new agenda to improve the framework for competitiveness in the
pharmaceutical industry and to harness its power to deliver on Europe's
health care goals was launched in Brussels today. Commissioners Erkki
Liikanen and David Byrne met health and industry ministers, pharmaceutical
leaders and patient representatives to establish common ground and agree
objectives. These stakeholders will meet three times over the coming
year to take stock of progress and suggest solutions to problems as
and when they arise. The stakeholders' group will report to
Commission President Romano Prodi in April 2002.

Following on from the December 2000 Competitiveness Round Table
meeting, the Commission today delivered on its promise to work with a
wide range of top players to define a few key objectives that
reconcile the needs of industry and patients.

Commission representatives and stakeholders came together to share a wide
variety of experience from different backgrounds, in the common conviction
that there are real benefits to be gained by pooling knowledge and going
beyond traditional approaches. Mr. Liikanen expressed the hope that the
group will be able to agree on policy approaches that do not necessarily
require the Commission to take legislative action, and stressed that the
Commission and interested parties are talking about examining how European
systems measure up.
The members of the new group are the following:

Erkki Liikanen, Commissioner for Enterprise and Information Society
David Byrne, Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection
Ulla Schmidt, German Minister for Health
Philip Hunt, UK Health Minister
