[e-drug] Questions on ARVs

E-DRUG: Questions on ARVs
-------------------------

Sir/Madam I have the following queries:

1) Trizir (combination of Abacavir, Lamivudine and AZT) is registered in
several countries. All of the ingredients are NRTI. I would like to know in
which cases Trizir is recommended for use?. I understand that HAART is
supposed to be composed of ARVs from different groups.

2) Is there a danger of resistance emergence when using monotherapy for
PMTCT e.g. AZT or nevirapine? is there a recommendation of using triple
therapy in this case?

3) PEP: Treatment with antiretroviral drugs may be appropriate following
occupational exposure to HIV-contaminated material (within 48 hours of
exposure). can this PEP recommenddation be applicable when someone do
unprotected sex (with HIV+ person).

I will appreciate your reply

[E-drug gets more and more basic questions like these on proper use of ARVs.
Obviously someone should send Mwemezi a sound answer (TADATIS is the Drug
Information Centre in the Tanzanian Drug regulatory Authority), but maybe as
a community we can collect a few critical websites with trusted ARV
information?
May I start recommending the WHO and UNAIDS websites?
www.who.int/hiv
www.unaids.org
Is there already a Tanzania based website on AIDS and ART?

The following issues would also benefit from a good review in E-drug:
- WHO recommendations include ABC but maybe recent findings are less
positive about ABC?
- use of NVP in MTCT and risk of resistance (recent S.Francisco conference
data)?
- does PEP work for unprotected sex?
Any E-drug volunteers?
