E-drug: simple linctus BP (cont)
--------------------------------
Angola succeeded in 1983 to have simple linctus BP as the only cough syrup
imported into Angola. The technical committee agreed that although
something should have been there to meet demand, there were no grounds for
anything more expensive or with any active ingredient.
The same thing had been done by Mozambique in the seventies. In Mozambique
it was locally manufactured, in Angola it was imported from a European
generic manufacturer.
These experiences apparently died for the same reason: no company was
interested in the product. Now, these two examples refer to countries where
only one product was goingto be available for one year until the next
tender. Thus, this feeling of non-ownership of the market by a company was
understandable. The SA situation may be different.
