E-drug: Re: Uganda Urges Compensation for AIDS Research Costs
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Balla he is wrong. By their own estimates R+D of a new compound is between
1 and 500 million. ARV income is already over 4 billion a year. In
otherwords costs have been recouped ages back and profits have been on a
roll for a while. We know that production costs have to be less than 400
US (otherwise CIPLA could not have afforded to make the offer it did) but
we do not know exactly what it is. Paying pharmas without info on profits
and production costs is bad policy and is certainly not required in the
instance of AIDS drugs. Might be different for other diseases where there
is no financial incentive to do the basic work. The Ugandan president has
been coming out with some uncomfortable statements on AIDS in recent
months.
