HIV testing in Africa: how much does it cost... (5)
---------------------------------------------------
I think cost also needs to be addressed in terms of economic condi-
tions. For example, an HIV test that cost US$ 20.00 in an African
country may seem reasonable compared to the cost of the test being
given in USA (where I am in USA it is US$ 78.00).
However that US$ 20.00 (or the equivalent in local currency), though
seemingly small compared to US$ 78.00, may be out of reach of the ma-
jority of people in a given African country. I think this also needs
to be addressed in terms of the cost of AIDS medications. Even if it
is half the cost of what it is in USA, I suspect it is still out of
reach of the majority of those with AIDS in Africa.
