Kenyan and Japanese scientists at the Kenyan Medical Research Institute
(KEMRI) have developed an HIV testing kit that is reportedly faster and
less expensive than the one currently used in Kenya. The Particle
Agglutination HIV Test can give results in as little as two hours and costs
about 60 Kenyan shillings. KEMRI's Dr. Davy Koech noted that compared to
the older ELISA test, the new kit has a longer shelf life and does not
require high-tech equipment or highly skilled technicians, so it can be
used in rural areas. Moreover, testing on 300 samples found the test's
accuracy to be greater than 98 percent.
