RFI: Malaria prophylaxis

Dear fellow Afro Netters,
I am seeking advice on malaria prophylaxis for Ethiopia. What is cur-
rently in use? American doctors routinely prescribe Lariam (mefloquine)
but it has some disturbing side effects. My parents were actually told
that Fansidar can be taken as a prophylaxis, which I had never heard
before.
How about the good old Paludrine/Chloroqine combination? What is the
drug resistance situation of malaria in Ethiopia?
Any advice would be appreciated.
