[e-drug] Extemporaneous compounding of medicines

E-DRUG: Extemporaneous compounding of medicines
-----------------------------------------------

Dear E-druggers,

Pharmaceutical extemporaneous compounding is an almost forgotten art of preparing custom-made medicinal formulations in complying with prescription of a registered doctor and tailor-made to suit an individual patient. The limitations of such extemporaneous preparations notwithstanding, they perhaps retain their utility in the resource-poor settings of government as well as non-government hospitals. Given the escalating and prohibitive cost of commercial medicine products, extemporaneous compounding may offer an acceptable cost-saver solution. However, it needs to be closely monitored and well regulated.

I am eager to know the current status of pharmaceutical compounding in different countries.

E-DRUG: Extemporaneous compounding of medicines (2)
---------------------------------------------------

Dear E-druggers,

The need for essential drugs is larger than the need for tailor-made
extemporaneous medicines in low resource settings.

The cost for essential medicine products may be prohibitive, but it is not escalating.

Producing quality medicine requires skill and production procedures,
production equipment and production rooms, raw materials, package materials, and labels.

Producing medicine is usually more complex than distributing medicines.

I am afraid that extemporaneous compounding offers no cost-saver solution.
