Endemic-Region Challenge Grants of USD 50,000 each available to exploit the Pathogen Box
MMV seeks proposals to unlock potential of 400 compounds for neglected disease drug discovery
MMV is issuing a call for proposals from endemic-country scientists to exploit the rich selection of active compounds within the Pathogen Box and boost neglected disease drug discovery. Five grants of USD 50,000 each are available to make the strongest proposals a reality.
Modelled on MMV's award winning Open Access Malaria Box, the Pathogen Box of 400 active compounds was launched in December 2015. Researchers requesting a Pathogen Box receive it free of charge. In return, they are asked to publish any data generated in the public domain, thus creating an open and collaborative forum for neglected diseases drug research.
Of the researchers who submit grant proposals, five will receive USD 50,000 each for their work on the Pathogen Box compounds. The goal is to kindle new research in disease-endemic countries, thus Principal Investigators must be based in endemic regions, where the majority of the work will be undertaken. Project proposals are expected to be at the concept stage (i.e. no prior experimental work is required) and work needs to be completed within 1 year. Selection will be made based on scientific merit and the potential for capacity building in disease-endemic countries.
All proposals to exploit the Pathogen Box should be sent electronically, using the template provided online, to proposals@mmv.org (link sends e-mail) by 12 noon CET Saturday, 30 April 2016. The Challenge Grants will be awarded by August 2016.
