SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR ABSTRACTS:
"Health Research and Development: Meeting the challenges of the year
2000 and beyond"
Organised by NMIMR in collaboration with African Forum for Health
Sciences INVITATION
The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), as part
of the activities commemorating its 20th anniversary, will host the
20th African Health Sciences Congress from 19th - 23rd April, 1999 on
behalf of the African Forum for Health Sciences (AFHES). The African
Forum for Health Sciences is a non-governmental organisation whose
objectives include the promotion of health research and networking in
Africa, The organisation of the African Health Sciences Congress has
been one of the annual activities of the AFHES since its founding in
1994. The Congress has since grown from its inception as a regional
grouping in East Africa into a continent-wide organisation that
brings African health scientists and researchers together once a
year.
SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME
The theme for the Congress is "Health Research and Development in Af-
rica: Meeting the Challenges of the Year 2000 and Beyond". The Con-
gress will be opened on the morning of 19th April after which there
will be plenary sessions on topics related to the theme of the Con-
gress and major health problems in Africa. Some of the areas to be
covered will include:
- HIV/AIDS
- Major Tropical Endemic Diseases
- Urbanisation and Environmental Health
- Sexual and Reproductive Health
- Health Sector Reforms
- Nutrition and Micro-nutrient Deficiencies
- Plant /Natural Medicinal Products
- Information Technology and Health Development
Keynote speakers will be invited to deliver state of the art lectures
addressing some of the major health problems affecting the continent
in the plenary sessions. Symposia are also planned on current ad-
vances in tropical health research to cover topics of interest and
importance to physicians, epidemiologists, pharmacists, allied health
personnel such as laboratory technicians, research scientists and
health administrators.
