5 is ending where are the 3? (2)
--------------------------------
Dear Dabesaki
The June 2005 report from UNAIDS/WHO says that around 1 million
were on ARVs by the end of June, 600,000 short of the milestone.
They reckon they will till hit the target of three million, just
six months behind schedule (which, for several hundred thousand
people is possibly six months too late).
UNAIDS reckon that at least another US$ 18 billion is needed
above current pledges over the next three years to sustain this
already slower than expected roll out of ARVs - the last Global
Fund funding conference and the result of the UN Summit and G8
suggest that only a fraction of this extra funding is going to
become available.
So, is it good or bad news? A bit of both - a lot is being done,
a lot has been achieved, but not enough, and the signs are that
more is not going to be forthcoming.
Who is to blame? Well, I am sure that will be for another three
days of e-mail bounces on AFRO-NETS to discuss! Where are the
three (million) indeed?!
