Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) offers two advanced courses in Amsterdam in August 2014.

1) Advanced course: Health Sector Reforms and Financing; towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC)

A course to learn more about the most important topics in health policy, planning and financing, their effects on equity and efficiency and their relation to poverty reduction and development. This popular 2-week course held at the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam (KIT) is geared towards senior managers who are actively involved in planning, management and evaluation of health sector reforms in developing countries. Facilitators include staff from The World Bank, WHO and Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This short course is accredited through the tropEd network and can be followed as a stand-alone course or as part of the Master International Health. Participants successfully completing the (optional) exam can gain 3 ECTS credits towards a Masters Degree.

2)Advanced course: Monitoring and Evaluation; innovations in a dynamic health systems environment

This course will allow key staff in Ministries of Health as well as external development partners to gain a deeper understanding of the role M&E plays in all aspects of the health system, including the institutional, political, financial, managerial, human resource, inter-sectoral and public health dimensions. This short course is accredited through the tropEd network and can be followed as a stand-alone course or as part of the Master International Health. Participants successfully completing the (optional) exam can gain 3 ECTS credits towards a Masters Degree.

Short Course Training Announcement: WOMEN'S HEALTH AND EMPOWERMENT

Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Dates: July 16-30, 2014 (9 AM to 5 PM)

This intensive, interdisciplinary short course is being offered by the Aga Khan University AKU) and the University of California Global Health Institute (UCGHI). Through case studies and exercises, participants will learn how to build women's empowerment into health programme and policies to improve their overall effectiveness. AKU is partnering with the UCGHI's Center of Expertise on Women's Health & Empowerment to offer this 2-weeks course in Nairobi, Kenya. The UCGHI's mission is to train the next generation of global health leaders, and accelerate the discovery and implementation of transformative global health solutions. The course was offered in California for the past three years and is newly adapted for the Global South. Course instructors will be from USA, Pakistan and Kenya.

Expected participants: Health and development NGO staff, graduate students, junior faculty members, lawyers, health professionals and officials from relevant government ministries and departments.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
  -Describe various aspects of women's health and disparities
  -Explain empowerment theory (including gender theory)
  -Discuss the women's movement, human rights conventions & masculinities
  -Know how to measure domains of empowerment
  -Analyze multiple case studies in women's health and empowerment
  -Develop and present a women's health and empowerment intervention
  -Understand the main components of a grant proposal

Criteria: Must hold an undergraduate degree or have the equivalent work experience; fluent in English; interest in health programmes and policies for girls and women.
