African Health Anthology on CD-ROM

This is an exciting Reference Source which is presented in a similar
way to Medline with Abstracts where they exist (which is almost all).
It is searchable via keywords using boolean language at three levels of
specificity: novice, advanced and specialised. It is very user friendly
and operates in windows and dos applications. You may request a free 30
day trial.
Here is a detailed description of the databases that are available on
the CD-ROM.
African Health Anthology on CD-Rom (1924 - present)
African Health Anthology (AHA) With over 300,000 records, AHA is the
premiere collection of bibliographic databases on African health is-
sues. AHA offers access to a unique collection of sources including
many from Africa and covering all aspects of African health issues.
NISC South Africa is pleased to publish this new collection of biblio-
graphic databases from Africa, Europe and the United States.
Databases on AHA include:
African Index Medicus (AIM) (1993 - present)
AIM's objective is to provide improved access to published and
unpublished health literature from Africa. The database of over
6,000+ records is a cooperative effort, produced by the membership
of the Association for Health Information Libraries in African
(AHILA), and the World Health Organization (WHO) Afro Regional
Office in Brazzaville. Data for inclusion in AHA is collated from
25 African countries.
African subset of CAB Health Database (1973 - present)
CAB Health brings together the resources of two internationally
renowned databases: The human health and diseases related information
from CAB Abstracts; and the file from the Public Health and Tropical
Medicine Database. The CAB Health Database is very strong in the
following subject areas: Parasitology, communicable diseases, human
nutrition, medicinal and poisonous plants, tropical medicine and
diseases, AIDS/HIV, and community and public health. There are
currently 70,000 records with abstracts and 12,000 new records are
added each year. The database is produced by CAB International in
the UK.
The Medicines Information Centre Reference Database of the University
of Cape Town (1980 - present)
With over 30,000 records, this important database was compiled in
response to the queries received by the Centre from all over Southern
Africa and includes the Centre's Monthly Bulletin, InforX-Med.
Emphasis is on information related to medicines, therapeutics, and
other aspects of medical science.
Community Health Information Database (CHID) (1993 - present)
This database of 11,000+ records is produced in the Medical Library
of the University of the Orange Free State, South Africa. Aimed at
the broad community as well as the information professional, CHID
indexes 65 South African medical journals, as well as grey literature,
pamphlets, posters, and videos. CHID includes contact information for
obtaining specific health information in Africa.
SAMED (1976 - 1996), produced by the Medical Research Council of South
Africa (MRC) indexes publications drawn from research supported in
South Africa by the MRC. With 11,000 records, SAMED indexes journal ar-
ticles, technical reports, theses, and grey literature. SAMED covers a
wide variety of topics including TB, trauma, nutrition, micro-toxins,
public health issues, urbanisation, health systems, AIDS and HIV.
African Subset of "Medline" (1966 - present)
Medline, the world's premiere health database, is produced by the Na-
tional Library of Medicine in Bethesda, USA. Coverage includes the en-
tire spectrum of medical literature. Information Scientists at the
South African Medical Research Council in Cape Town have developed this
Medline subset to emphasize the publications from Africa and the health

African Health subset of "WATERLIT" (1975 - present)
The provision of an uncontaminated water supply is crucial to public
health. WATERLIT, a South African database, covers all aspects of wa-
ter, wastewater and sanitation. Subjects include: water-borne diseases
and parasites, water supply & water quality, fluoridation, toxicology,
sanitation, hygiene, and the health aspects of irrigation, composting
and sewage treatment.
African Health Subset of the "Index to South African Periodicals"
(ISAP) (1987 - present)
The subset includes all the health and medical journals indexed in
ISAP, as well as articles on health and medical matters from related
magazines and journals. Materials indexed include: scholarly research
and popular literature in all medical and health fields; emphasizing
topics such as public health, nursing, dentistry, veterinary science,
alternative medicine and complementary therapy.
African Health Subset of the "South African Index to Theses and Disser-
tations" (1924 - present)
This subset includes all the medical and health related theses included
in the Index to Theses and Dissertations compiled at the University of
Potchefstroom. Topics includes all aspects of medicine, nursing, phar-
macology, psychology, public health, dentistry, and veterinary science.
