AIDS Africa welcomes your membership
------------------------------------
Dear colleagues,
I have taken over the moderation of one of the largest African yahoo
HIV/AIDS group. You are more than welcome to join it.
The site address is
http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/aids-africa
This group which was formerly called Nigeria AIDS (Nigeria AIDS moved
to its own site) would like to hear your opinion on HIV/AIDS in Af-
rica.
AIDS-Africa will attempt to bring you the latest news, editorials,
and research regarding HIV/AIDS in Africa and the rest of sub-Saharan
Africa. Make yourself at home, browse, and learn about AIDS Africa.
Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions. We want to you stay
and be part of this virtual networking group. Let us know if there is
anything we can do to ensure your continuing interest.
As we all know, the spread of HIV has had many consequences on the
unfortunate societies that have come under its unrelenting siege. One
of its most awful consequences is the growing number of orphans left
behind by young couples dying of AIDS. It is estimated that there are
close to 10 million AIDS orphans in Africa and above and beyond of
the harsh level of poverty most African children face, AIDS orphans
face a multitude of obstacles. First, these children suffer from hav-
ing witnessed their parents' slow demise from the debilitating dis-
ease. Second, they constantly deal with the underlying social stigma
of having lost their parents to AIDS; they feel left out and alone.
Third, they have to suddenly adjust to the instability and severe
economic hardship that results from the collapse of their immediate
families. Most end up with their relatives while some end up in the
streets. All involved, including extended family members taking the
orphan, will suffer from not having the financial resources to care
for a new member adequately. In most cases, the life these children
lead is far from a regular African childhood.
A brief history of myself. My name is Chifu, a Kenyan. I am also a
moderator of Kenya AIDS group (http://www.yahoogroups.com/kenya-aids)
with over 500 members worldwide networking on HIV/AIDS and offering
grant and other assistance. The amazing networking at that group was
what prompted yahoo to ask me to take over this group.
Posting has resumed and thanks!!! together we can make this happen.
This is not my group. It is your group too. You own it too!!
Please circulate widely.
Deeply dedicated,
Chifu
