AZT Trials in Developing Countries (12)
---------------------------------------
Costs of AZT intervention in the third world.
Richard Laing's approach is different. He talks about the cost-
effective analysis of AZT intervention. If a country introduces AZT
intervention as a policy, I assume it would be the responsibility of
the government to fund it.
Assume an African country with a population of 30 million. If the
crude birth rate is 40 per 1,000, then the number of women to be
screened would be 1,200,000.
Cost of screening 1,200,000 women @ US$ 10 is 12 million US$. Assume
the sero-positive rate of 10%. The number of women to be treated is
120,000. Cost of treatment is US $ 500 (using the minimum dose).
Total cost of drugs is 120,000 X 500 = 60,000,000 US$.
Total cost of programme is 72 million US$.
Per capita expenditure is US$ 2.4.
I welcome views on this analysis.
