Call for Applications for Masters Research Training Fellowships
----------------------------------------------------------------
Health Consequences of Population Change
The Wellcome Trust offers opportunities for research training under
its new Health Consequences of Population Change (HCPC) programme
which focuses on the changing health outcomes resulting from demo-
graphic, socio-economic and lifestyle changes taking place in devel-
oping countries; these include migration, health issues of youth and
ageing populations, fertility, urbanisation and the environment, risk
behaviour shifts, and the adoption of developed country lifestyles.
As part of this programme, the Trust invites applications for Mas-
ters Research Training Fellowships.
Objectives
* To strengthen scientific research capacity in developing countries
by supporting research training as part of a Masters degree rele-
vant to the Wellcome Trusts HCPC programme.
* To facilitate the development of links and collaborations between
internationally recognised centres of excellence in research train-
ing and local research-active teams or field-based research pro-
grammes.
* To provide opportunities for potential regional collaborations
through the Trusts major awards in developing countries.
These awards are intended to provide a flexible approach to Masters
research training, which could be formal taught courses, part-time,
modular or distance learning programmes at internationally recognised
centres of excellence in research training (excluding those in the
USA). Research training must be combined with undertaking a research
project in a research-active setting or within existing research pro-
grammes in developing countries. Potential applicants will be nomi-
nated by the principal investigator of programmes of research based
in developing countries. The principal investigator will plan the
content of the Masters course component in consultation with the
training centre. Both research training and research project should
be tailored to the needs of the candidate and his/her career aspira-
tions, in the context of local public health issues and/or allied to
the programme of research to which the candidate will be attached.
Nominations
Candidate(s) must be nominated by the principal investigator of re-
search programmes based in developing countries who will submit the
application on their behalf. Direct applications from individuals
will not be considered.
Tenure
Awards will be offered for a maximum of 30 months depending on the
needs of both the research training and the project phase. A period
of no more than 12 months should be dedicated to undertaking an ap-
propriate Masters course at an internationally recognised training
centre of excellence (in the applicants country or abroad) combined
with undertaking a research project as outlined above.
Provision
Whilst undertaking Masters course, Fellows will receive a stipend in
accordance with the local cost of living allowance in the country in
which he/she will be training and approved tuition fees for up to 12
months. For the research project, support may be requested for the
Fellows salary and project dedicated expenses. The Trust does not
provide support for undesignated institutional overheads.
Eligibility
Candidates should be residents of the developing countries in Africa,
Asia or Latin America, or the restructuring countries of Central and
Eastern Europe, including the former Soviet Union. They should nor-
mally be educated at least to first degree level in a relevant sub-
ject.
Assessment Criteria
Applications will be considered competitively, based on an assessment
of the candidates scientific background and potential for develop-
ment of his/her research career, appropriateness of the chosen Mas-
ters course, suitability of the proposed training centre and scien-
tific merit of the research project.
Deadlines
The closing dates for receipt of full applications are:
1 July 2002 (decisions will be notified in October 2002).
3 March 2003 (decisions will be notified in June 2003).
Late applications will not be considered.
