Call for articles for the next issue
Exchange is a magazine on HIV/AIDS, sexuality and gender in developing countries. It is published quarterly by the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) of the Netherlands in collaboration with Southern Africa HIV and AIDS Information Dissemination (SAfAIDS) in Pretoria, South Africa.
Exchange is continuously welcoming contributions for its forthcoming issues. The articles should preferably focus on HIV in relation to gender, culture, sexual health, sexuality and/or rights issues.
We are especially interested in receiving reflective papers from programme managers and other staff of local and national level NGOs working in the Global South about their successful and promising programmes, strategies or approaches. Please note that we prefer articles that go beyond describing a phenomenon by sharing good and promising practice in programming or advocacy work.
The next (September 2010) issue of Exchange on HIV/AIDS, Sexuality and Gender will focus on Male reproductive health in the context of HIV prevention.
Gender influences women's and men's health in fundamental ways, and traditional ideas about gender can place both women's and men's health at risk. Women tend to have less education and fewer job opportunities. Women's potential to control and improve their wealth as well as their health is more limited than men's in most of the world. This prevents women from accessing critical health information and services and can lead to poor reproductive, maternal and child health outcomes, including unwanted infection.
At the same time, the gender norm of a strong, dominant and invulnerable male is detrimental for men's health. Men do not seek health information and services due to traditional notions of masculinity, where asking for help from a nurse or doctor is viewed as a sign of weakness. Many men feel it is their right to refuse to practise safe sex, to allow their female partners to practise it too, or even to discuss matters pertaining to HIV infection. These refusals can lead to among other, HIV infection.
