Call for Articles on HIV/AIDS in Africa
---------------------------------------

An Invitation to Contribute to a Special Issue of the Review of African
Political Economy on HIV/AIDS

My colleague, Janet Bujra, and I are planning a Special Issue of the
Review of African Political Economy devoted to the contemporary crisis
of HIV/AIDS in Africa and are seeking articles or briefings to be con-
sidered for inclusion in it, particularly from African researchers and
activists.

We are looking for contributions, grounded in social science and the
broader global context, which explore the following:

1. The impact of AIDS on African economies at household, community or
   national levels;
2. Analyses of the way HIV/AIDS is gendered or how it reflects cul-
   tural, ethnic, religious, generational or class divisions;
3. The social basis of interventions or of organisations struggling
   with AIDS care or prevention;
4. Human rights or ethical issues - e.g. compulsory testing, confiden-
   tiality, exclusionary practices; global inequalities in practice and
   outcomes;
5. Analyses of the state policy and practice in relation to AIDS;
6. Assessment of the impact of HIV/AIDS on public institutions such as
   the military, health services or education 7. Impact on families and
   households.

Articles (substantive pieces between 8,000-10,000 words covering origi-
nal research not published elsewhere) are expected to be more conceptu-
ally and theoretically framed; Briefings (shorter pieces aimed at rele-
vant information that needs a wider circulation, usually less than
3,000) may be more descriptive. If submitting an article, you should
also include an abstract of no more than 300 words. Please consult
ROAPE's website (http://www.roape.org) for more details about the jour-
nal if you wish. Our deadline for receipt of material is 15 September
2000. But if you would like to submit a contribution please let us know
well before that.

We have undertaken to edit this particular issue as members of the Edi-
torial Group of ROAPE, but also as the co-ordinators of a recent team
project comparing the gendered impact of HIV/AIDS in Tanzania and Zam-
bia, which will shortly be published: AIDS, Sexuality and Gender in Af-
rica: Collective Strategies and Struggles in Tanzania and Zambia
(Routledge: London, forthcoming).
