Genders & Sexualities in Africa: Opportunities and Challenges in the 21st Century

Empire State College SUNY
Syracuse, New York, U.S.A.
September 30 to October 4, 2009

The 2009 conference of the International Resource Network in Africa (IRN-Africa) will bring together researchers, activists and thinkers whose intellectual work and political engagement is centered around issues of gender and sexuality, including gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered (LGBTQ) peoples in Africa and the Diaspora. The conference seeks to explore new opportunities arising from the internalization of research on sexualities in Africa, new challenges we are encountering in the 21st century, and new partnerships drawing from our diverse experiences in the Diaspora. We invite submissions from both scholars and public intellectuals whose work defines new critical pathways to constructing a utilitarian and collective knowledge about sexuality, gender, society, and human agency. Concomitantly, we will explore and theorize new epistemological, methodological and political horizons for research on sexuality in

Africa and the Diaspora in the era of globalization.
Possible topics include: ethics, the legal environment, health and economic development, education, human rights and duties, law and religion, politics and culture, race, the imaginary and not yet imagined, new technologies, identities, and sexual citizenships.

Empirical and theoretical contributions are welcomed.
The deadline for abstracts is July 15, 2009. Selected authors will be notified on July 30, 2009 and the full paper must be submitted by August 30, 2009. Selected papers will be considered for publication in Outliers, the IRN-Africa’s online collection of essays and creative work on sexualities. The meeting is heavily centered on brainstorming both scientific and creative conversations about the empirical relevance and theoretical premise of research on genders and sexualities in Africa. A limited number of travel awards are available to cover transportation and accommodation costs. Early submissions are strongly encouraged. Authors who cannot attend the conference will still be able to publish their work in the journal.
