I refer to the suggestion that Goodman and Gilmans book "The Pharmacol-
ogical Basis of Therapeutics" should be included in an Essential Book-
list is a reasonable one but it is a very expensive book (US$ 89).
There is an alternative produced from Nepal. I attach a short review
which I wrote for the E-Drug conference.
The book is called "Manual of Drugs and Therapeutics" by Mohan Joshi
and Ramesh Adhikari from Nepal. The book is in three parts. The first
section is a very useful short overview of the principles of Rational
Prescribing. The second section which is about 20 chapters is a compre-
hensive therapeutics book and the third section is a well selected and
relatively brief drug formulary. While written by mainly Nepali authors
it has clear relevance to other developing countries. It is well in-
dexed, the table of contents is easy to follow and there are no confus-
ing Appendices or Annexes.
The book has been published by the Health Learning materials centre (a
WHO Collaborating Centre) at the Institute of Medicine, PO Box 2533,
Maharajgunj, Kathmandu, Nepal. The price of the book is only US$ 10.
For anybody who is teaching undergraduate or postgraduate medical stu-
dents Therapeutics or who are teaching in schools of Pharmacy I would
encourage you to review this book. I think that it could serve as a
standard text. Hopefully it will be much cheaper and is I think more
appropriate for Developing Country medical and pharmacy schools.
I think that we should try to encourage publication of quality academic
books in developing countries for developing countries School of Medi-
cine and Pharmacy. The best way to do this is to use the books, and
recommend their purchase.
So please request a review copy and if you like it use it in your
courses and recommend it.
