European Course in Tropical Epidemiology

The European Course in Tropical Epidemiology (ECTE) is a collabora-
tive venture of various European institutes of tropical medicine and
public health (e.g. Antwerp, Basel, G�teborg, Heidelberg, Liverpool,
London, Verona) and is held annually in different places. In 2003,
the Nordic School of Public Health will organise the program in G�te-
borg, Sweden. ECTE is an intensive basic course in epidemiology and
medical statistics and is intended for physicians, nurses, health
program managers and health administrators from tropical countries,
and for other persons with a professional interest in public health
in tropical countries.

Learning objectives

The course provides participants with basic epidemiological and sta-
tistical skills in the assessment of health problems and service pri-
orities and in the planning of field studies. Emphasis is put on the
methodology and practical application of epidemiological tools in de-
veloping countries, on the interpretation of data and on the report-
ing of results from operational field studies.

Prerequisites

The course is appropriate for those without formal training in epide-
miology or statistics. However, the course is intensive and appli-
cants should have a good command of English.

Outline of the programme

Teaching includes lectures, seminars, practical exercises and comput-
ing, using the epidemiological and statistical software package EPI-
INFO (public domain software). The teachers and facilitators come
from the institutions in the organising network. The following sub-
jects are covered:

* basic epidemiology of infectious diseases, focussing on those oc-
  curring in the tropics
* types of epidemiological studies
* risk estimation, high risk groups & risk factors
* screening
* outbreak investigation and response
* qualitative approaches in epidemiology
* survey design, sampling, organisation
* questionnaire design
* data entry, checking & processing
* basic statistics using computers

Course Fee

The course fee is EUR 1,500. This includes participation in the
course, course manual and handouts, reception, tea/coffee and a
course dinner. The fee does not include travel or meals other than
mentioned above. No scholarships or grants are available from The
Nordic School of Public Health.

Application and selection

The number of places is limited. Applicants should download and com-
plete the application form and submit it as soon as possible, to-
gether with the documents specified on the form. Applications should
reach the organiser (by fax/letter/email-attachment) latest by April
30, 2003. Selection of candidates will be based on their suitability
and on availability of funds. By May 15, applicants will be informed
about the decision of the selection committee. The course fee is due
on notification of acceptance. Payment should be received by the or-
ganiser until June 15; admission will be confirmed on reception of
payment.
