AFRO-NETS> Fact Sheets on HIV/AIDS for Nurses and Midwives

Fact Sheets on HIV/AIDS for Nurses and Midwives
-----------------------------------------------

Welcome to the HIV/AIDS Fact Sheets

Thirteen fact sheets on HIV/AIDS for nurses and midwives have been
produced in order to strengthen nursing and midwifery practice in
this field. The topics covered are wide ranging, reflecting the need
to consider nursing and midwifery practice in the context of overall
health systems development.

The purpose of developing the fact sheets is to promote evidence
based nursing practice in the care of people with HIV/AIDS.

These materials are designed to be adapted for use at national or
sub-regional level. They are available on CD and via Internet. They
give general information and their target audiences are nurses and
midwives. Nevertheless they will be useful for other health workers
and for other professionals such as teachers, pharmacists and commu-
nity health workers.

The Fact Sheets have been developed with a global steering group.

Much attention has been paid to design, so that the materials are
presented in an attractive, easy to read format and available not
only in hard copy but also on the Web and in three programmes on
CDROM.

WHO/OSD aims to be flexible as possible in helping you to adapt and
use this material. The text is generic as possible in this version of
the Fact Sheets. You may to include local figures and to adapt some
of the text to reflect local practices. Remember! These Fact Sheets
provide basic information only. There is much more to know on each of
the subjects covered.

Dissemination and Utilization

The fact sheets should be disseminated and available in all corners
of the African Region. WHO is in the process of translating the fact
sheets in French and Portuguese.

Marketing and advocacy initiatives in countries to sensitise policy-
makers and the users of the fact sheets are important. National and
international advocacy efforts should not only be directed to aware-
ness but also to the actual utilization of the fact sheets.

The purpose of developing the fact sheets is to strengthen nursing
and midwifery practice in the field of HIV/AIDS as well as to promote
evidence based nursing practice in the care of people with HIV/AIDS.

We would appreciate your help in evaluating the adaptation, dissemi-
nation and use of these Fact Sheets. For more information about
evaluation and dissemination of the Fact Sheets, please contact:
