Funding opportunity for research and training on Malarial Anemia
----------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Colleagues,

In follow up to a workshop on Pathogenesis of Malarial Anemia held by
MIM with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease
(NIAID), the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and Fo-
garty International Center (FIC) of the US National Institutes of
Health (NIH) - NIAID has now created a funding opportunity for stud-
ies into malarial anemia with a Request for Application (RFA) solic-
iting research on this subject. The RFA is open to international in-
vestigators, not just US researchers. The Fogarty International Cen-
ter has released a companion RFA for international training programs
on malarial anemia in conjunction with the NIAID grant.

The FIC currently supports innovative, collaborative malaria research
training programs that contribute to the long-term goal of harnessing
scientific knowledge and skills to enhance efforts to prevent ma-
laria-related morbidity and mortality and to control malaria trans-
mission in endemic developing countries:
http://www.nih.gov/fic/programs/malaria.html

The International Malaria Research Training Program (IMRTP) RFA is
being issued a second time by FIC in conjunction with the NIAID RFA
for research grants entitled "Malaria Vaccine Development: Under-
standing Malarial Anemia" (AI-01-007).

Applicants for this NIAID RFA are invited to submit proposals to
train or expand the capabilities of scientists and health profession-
als from developing countries, in which malaria is endemic, to engage
in research relevant to the pathogenesis of severe malarial anemia.
In addition, institutions with current FIC IMRTP awards are invited
to apply for supplemental funds to expand their activities to include
training in this area.

Sincerely,

Andrea Egan, PhD
