Health Informatics in Africa (HELINA) 2003 Conference
"Communication and information technology in the fight against
HIV/AIDS in Africa"
12 - 15 October 2003

The International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) will convene
the HELINA 2003 conference (HEaLth Informatics in Africa) in South
Africa from 12 to 15 October 2003. The conference will focus on com-
munication and information technologies (ICT) in the fight against
HIV/AIDS in Africa. The goal of HELINA 2003 is to introduce those who
face the challenges of addressing the issues related to HIV/AIDS re-
search and clinical support, to those who develop potentially helpful
communication and information technologies.
More than one hundred submissions were received in response to the
call for papers, and an exciting programme is being compiled from the
submissions and with inputs from invited speakers.
Early bird registration for the conference closes on 12 August 2003,
so book now to take advantage of the reduced rates!
ORGANISERS: IMIA and the South African Health Informatics Association
(SAHIA).
CO-ORGANISERS: World Health Organisation, Regional Office for Africa.
PARTNERS: Harvard Medical International (USA); National Library of
Medicine (USA); South African Medical Research Council; Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (USA).
The conference will bring together expert clinicians and researchers
in HIV/AIDS and regional and international experts in health infor-
matics to address a diversity of issues including clinical trials,
just-in-time information delivery and medical decision support in Af-
rica.
CONFERENCE FOCUS
The conference will have four tracks:
* Clinical Care,
* Public Health Infrastructure,
* Public Policy,
* Research, including Clinical Trials.
African and other international experts will be invited to present in
the fields of HIV/AIDS, Health Informatics, care delivery, economics,
politics and cultural issues, relating specifically to Africa.
REGISTRATION FEES
Early bird: ZAR 3,000 (developing country delegates) or US$ 600 (de-
veloped country delegates).
Early bird registration closes on 12 August 2003. Higher fees are ap-
plicable after this date.
Requests for financial support will be considered. Closing date for
applications: 1 August 2003.
