How many Africans? (6)
----------------------
In response to the question posed by Paul Chinnock, Editor of Africa
Health, and which was raised previously on AFRO-NETS, subscribers sta-
tistics are as follows:
As of June 30: 632 subscribers from 60 countries
# countries Region
21 Africa
8 Asia
7 Latin America and Caribbean
2 Middle East
22 UK, US, Europe, Australia
There are 177 individual subscribers from Africa but many more people
follow the discussions as computers are shared. From SatelLife's expe-
rience in Africa, we know that at least 5 people share a computer. 246
subscribers comprise the last category. There are many subscribers who
indicate a .com email address (using hotmail.com, juno.com) located in
the US but they could very easily be located in other parts of the
world.
[e.g. @harare.iafrica.com in Zimbabwe D.N. Mod.]
African participation in AFRO-NETS was discussed in the past. Access to
computers, telephone lines, e-mail services and cost are real chal-
lenges to health professionals in Africa. However, as the organisation
which administers this discussion group our perspective is that it is
vital to create a forum where information exchange can occur. We have a
commitment to providing the service and hope that participation will
grow gradually over time.
Best wishes,
Leela McCullough
