Initiatives on Malaria ... (13)
-------------------------------
Source: <malaria@wehi.edu.au>

During the last couple of days I have followed with great attention the
discussion regarding research, practice, funding, cultural differences,
etc. connected to malaria. Let me (also) have a few remarks (i.e. today
when I arrived to my work I had 32 e-mail letters, mainly from this
net)

Millicent Akinsuhure (Canada) wrote that "...commercial interest is a
major factor in finding cures for diseases, NOT the needs of poor."
This is absolutely true. Spilker and Cuatrecasas wrote in their famous
book ("Inside the Drug Industry", Prous, Barcelona, l990.): "Making
medicines is big business....Profit, and especially the hope of a new
big discovery that can bring big profits, provides both the incentives
and resources, and is the fuel that runs this medicine-making machine."
(See: "Orphan-diseases")

In other words the society (particularly in the developing countries)
needs different sources private-funding, the financial help of the
WHO/UNDP/World Bank, etc., because without such aid the proper and ade-
quate (?) public health system will and could not work.

Best regards to all of you in the net,
