International Course in Applied Epidemiology

The International Course in Applied Epidemiology is a four-week pro-
gram patterned after CDC's annual EIS Course. The overall objective
of the program, which is conducted in English, is to provide partici-
pants with basic skills needed to practice Epidemiology. Space is
limited to 50 participants.

The International Course consists of:
* Presentations and Discussions on:
    Epidemiological principles and basic statistical analysis
    Public health surveillance
    Field investigations
    Surveys and Sampling
* Epidemiological aspects of current major problems in international
  health
* Epidemiological problems, based on actual field investigations,
  discussed in small groups
* Presentations by participants of epidemiological data from their
  own countries
* Computer training in the use of a software program, Epi Info, de-
veloped at CDC & WHO for epidemiologists, that combines word process-
ing, data management, analysis and graphics.
* Presentations on the organization and work of the CDC in Interna-
  tional Health.

The fee is US$ 1,850 which includes tuition, books materials and sup-
plies.

Applicants must submit all of the following information before their
application will be considered:

a. A completed application form

b. A brief description of the applicants' current position and re-
sponsibilities, a curriculum vita, a one-page statement as to how
he/she plans to use the Epidemiology training. A letter of support
from a present or former CDC or Emory University staff member, if
available, can be useful in our evaluation of an applicant.

c. Written verification of financial support from the sponsor for the
tuition fee and all maintenance expenses.

d. Applicants are encouraged to submit a title and outline of a pro-
posed 10-minute presentation on personal epidemiological work either
performed, in-progress, or planned. Applicants who do not have work
of their own to present, may discuss the epidemiological aspects of
an important public health problem in their country.

In addition, applicants who have not used English as their language
of education should submit a letter from a US Embassy, USAID offi-
cial, UN agency official, or another person of authority, attesting
to their ability to comprehend and deliver technical oral presenta-
tions in English. The TOEFL exam score is acceptable for this re-
quirement.

Partial financial support for one or several qualified candidates who
are not supported by government or an international agency is avail-
able. Candidates interested in this support should so indicate when
they submit their application materials.

If participants are not familiar with the vocabulary and principles
of basic Epidemiology, we recommend that they complete CDC's "Princi-
ples of Epidemiology" home study course (553030) or an equivalent.
The book is available from our office for US$ 50 plus US$ 25 overseas
shipping.

Participants may stay at the Villa International, a residential fa-
cility for international participants located one block from
Emory/CDC, at the monthly rate of approximately US$ 450 in a shared
room. Complete cooking and eating facilities are available.

Participants should bring hand scientific calculators if they have
one.

The deadline for receiving all completed information is June 1, 2000.
Applications received after this deadline will be considered based
upon available space. Preference will be given to applicants whose
work involves priority public health problems in international
health.
