International Day Against Female Genital Mutilation (7)
-------------------------------------------------------

Dear Christian and other readers:

At first, I just deleted Christian's message because it seemed so un-
necessarily rude, and seemed to attack opinions rather than discuss
opinions. However, keeping the dialogue going is a good way to even-
tually find common ground.

I don't believe that anything I wrote implied that the issue is too
complicated to discuss by e-mail. What a peculiar position that would
be since we are all discussing many issues via Internet, and would
like for even more opinions to be aired, discussed and taken seri-
ously.

I also did not "advertise" any solution for FGM. My point was that
traditions are important to people and when any particular practice
is being targeted for change, outsiders involved can be seen as at-
tacking people's beliefs. Many communities, for whom the practice of
FGM is tied up with fundamental beliefs, have found ways to continue
expressing those beliefs without damaging women's health.
