Fourth International Conference
Call for Abstracts
The Conference Theme
Creating Healthy Societies through Inclusion and Equity
The International Society for Equity in Health, ISEqH, welcomes
those interested in promoting equity in health to share experi-
ence and expertise at its Fourth International Conference in
Adelaide, Australia.
The overarching theme for the ISEQH's Fourth International Con-
ference -Creating Healthy Societies through Inclusion and Eq-
uity-reflects the central role of social, political, and eco-
nomic determinants in creating health.
We encourage you to submit your abstract for oral or poster
presentation. This conference offers a unique opportunity for
those with a common interest in equity and health. ISEqH is par-
ticularly keen to encourage researchers from the southern hemi-
sphere to participate.
A dynamic mix of papers and workshops will provide a stimulating
forum for discussions and debates.
There is special interest in contributions that extend beyond
descriptions of inequity to pathways to achieving equity and as-
sessment of the success of interventions to achieve it.
In addition, the conference will focus on two new topics, to en-
courage the presentation and discussion of research and evalua-
tion on the achievement of equity:
§ aboriginal health, acknowledging the need to address the ineq-
uities experienced by many indigenous communities; and
§ arts and equity in health, exploring ways to evaluate how
working through the arts improves social inclusion and enhances
equity in health.
Working Definitions
§ Equity in health: The absence of systematic and potentially
remediable differences in one or more aspects of health across
populations or population groups defined socially, economically,
demographically, or geographically.
§ Inequity in health: Systematic and potentially remediable dif-
ferences in one or more aspects of health across populations or
population groups defined socially, economically, demographi-
cally, or geographically.
§ Equity (policy and actions): Active policy decisions and pro-
grammatic actions directed at improving equity in health or in
reducing or eliminating inequalities in health.
§ Equity (research): Research to elucidate the genesis and char-
acteristics of inequity in health for the purpose of identifying
factors amenable to policy decisions and programmatic actions to
reduce or eliminate inequities.

Adelaide, the Host City
Cosmopolitan Adelaide is located in South Australia, between the
sheltered waters of the Gulf of St Vincent and its backdrop of
scenic hills and valleys.
Adelaide's compact, vibrant centre is encircled by a green belt
of parklands. Settled in 1836, the city has developed to encom-
pass the vigour and excitement of a modern city, while retaining
the charm and grace of the past.
South Australia has a proud history of working towards health
equity. A capacity building scholarship program funded by the
South Australian Government is being established to provide op-
portunities for local South Australian delegates with little ex-
perience in documenting or presenting their work. The scholar-
ship includes mentoring through the South Australian Community
Health Research Unit, and covers registration and some other
conference costs.
