Post-doc position in Tanzania: spatial analysis of the impact of in-
secticide-treated nets (ITNs) for malaria control.
We are looking for a suitably qualified post-doctoral scientist with
substantial field experience to take over the management of this re-
search project. The core scientific aspects of the project will en-
tail:
1) The long-term follow-up of a birth cohort of ITN users and non-
users (to be completed in 2003);
2) The spatial and epidemiological analysis of mortality patterns in
the study area;
3) The effect of ITN coverage on child mortality;
4) Whether ITN impact (especially on mortality) is mediated by an
entomological mass effect.
Since 1996 the Swiss Tropical Institute (STI) and the Ifakara Health
Research and Development Center (IHRDC) have implemented jointly a
large social marketing programme of insecticide-treated nets (ITN)
for malaria control - the KINET project. For the evaluation of the
long-term impact of ITNs in small children we have set up a demo-
graphic surveillance system (DSS) covering a rural population of over
60,000. Phase 1 of the programme will be completed in June 2000, and
another three-year phase has been secured from the Swiss National
Science Foundation. Phase 2 will build on the work carried out during
the initial 4 years and develop new aspects, especially in the area
of spatial analysis of ITN impact.
Job profile:
The position holder will be a staff member of the Swiss Tropical In-
stitute in Basel, Switzerland based at the Ifakara Health Research
and Development Center in Ifakara, Tanzania. This position is suit-
able for a person with a family and small children. Besides develop-
ing a substantial research agenda, the applicant's core duties will
involve:
- Help run a demographic surveillance system (DSS) in a rural popula-
tion of 55,000 people, including its further development;
- Supervise the work of junior scientists and support staff, includ-
ing at least one Tanzanian PhD student/entomologist;
- Participate in all aspects of the data analysis, especially with
regard to spatial data;
- Participate for about 20% of his/her time in other field epidemiol-
ogy activities of the IHRDC.
Candidate's profile:
- Degree in natural sciences or medicine
- MPH/MSc level training in epidemiology, statistics or related sub-
jects
- Doctoral thesis (PhD) in the area of epidemiology, statistics or
related subjects; substantial work experience could replace the re-
quirement for a PhD
- Good written and spoken command of English
Expected experience:
- At least 3 years of field experience in the area of epidemiology
and control of infectious diseases, preferably in Africa.
- Documented experience with running large-scale field work
- Experience in the area of malaria epidemiology
- Familiarity with computers and with most commonly used software
packages for epidemiological/statistical analysis
- Previous experience in spatial epidemiology is an advantage
