Letter to The Lancet re. DG WHO election (4)
--------------------------------------------

Greetings

Dr Dovlo asked if there are any ideas on who the potential candidates
are and I remembered a previous UN Wire article posted on AFRO-NETS
on Sept 25 (posted below) which states that Peter Piot (UNAIDS) is
being considered, and that Bernard Kouchner (former French Health
Minister and MSF co-founder) and Mozambican Prime Minister Pascoal
Mocumbi have announced their interest as well. The Lancet also refers
to other potential candidates.

It makes one wonder on the politics of election and selection. Often,
it seems that once groups of countries agree/decline supporting spe-
cific candidates, there are new candidates who enter the race.
Brundtland's sudden decision not to run for a second term only on Au-
gust 23 has probably left little time for candidates to develop their
campaigns and, as Dr Dovlo calls it, 'manifestos'.

Richard Horton's Lancet article
http://www.thelancet.com/journal/vol360/iss9341/full/llan.360.9336.editorial_and_review.22468.1
has an interesting description of the process and possible candidates
so far.
