AFRO-NETS> Malaria Maps of most African Countries

Malaria Maps of most African Countries
--------------------------------------

Dear colleagues,

A set of downloadable malaria maps of most African countries are
available on the MARA/ARMA site:

http://www.mrc.ac.za/mara/

The following maps are available:

- Endemicity distribution
- Months of risk
- Start of Transmission season
- End of transmission season
- Population in 1995

BEWARE !! These malaria maps are theoretical models based on long-
term climate data. Although they are reasonably accurate, they are
not based on actual malaria data and may not reflect the real malaria
status. They show the theoretical suitability of local climatic con-
ditions, and therefore the potential distribution of malaria in the
average year. Note that climatic conditions, and therefore malaria
transmission, can vary substantially from one year to the next. Ma-
laria control activities can also dramatically alter the malaria
transmission situation.

Research is ongoing to enhance these maps and second-generation prod-
ucts are already available for Kenya and Mali. An initiative is being
initiated in West Africa (see "Projects").

More information can be found on the web site, especially in the
Technical Report (in English and French).

We hope that these maps will prove useful for malaria controllers and
researchers alike. MARA/ARMA is a small informal structure struggling
with funding and we would appreciate if users could clearly acknowl-
edge the source of the map/information in the event of public viewing
and/or publication.
