Advanced Module "Health of Unstable Populations"

This course is organized jointly by the Department of Tropical Hy-
giene and Public Health, the Center of Research on the Epidemiology
of Disasters (CRED), University of Louvain/Belgium, and the Interna-
tional Federation of Red Cross/Red Crescent, Geneva. The course is
intended for health professionals from Northern and from developing
countries: medical doctors, nurses, epidemiologists, social scien-
tists and public health experts. The goal of the course is to provide
a better understanding of the issues related to the health care of
refugees, internally displaced persons and the affected host popula-
tion in developing countries, and to the health care of migrants in
Europe.
Objectives:
* to sensitize participants for the health of unstable populations
which have become a new dimension and challenge for the public health
policy and planning;
* to create awareness about the relief and development context in
which international organizations work;
* to enable participants to better design health programs focussing
on unstable populations with inclusion of the host population.
At the end of the course participants should be able to
* explain the relief and the development context in which interna-
tional organizations work;
* explain the determinants of migrants health in developing countries
and in Europe;
* apply rapid assessment methods in emergency situations;
* use strategic and operational planning and health management tolls
in unstable situations;
* apply planning methods in post-conflict situations;
* explain the driving forces and determinants of donor coordination;
* set up a disaster preparedness plan on health district level.
