Merck Vaccine Network - Africa
------------------------------
ANNOUNCEMENT - REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS
The Merck Company Foundation is soliciting proposals from academic
institutions, working in collaboration with academic institutions in
Africa in infectious disease research or related areas of collabora-
tion, to develop new training initiatives focused on increasing chil-
dren's access to vaccines in Africa.
The objective of this initiative, "Merck Vaccine Network - Africa"
(MVN-A), is to provide training, in Africa, for national and regional
mid- to high-level program managers of vaccine management and immuni-
zation services programs.
The Merck Company Foundation is providing support for this project as
part of the commitment of Merck & Co. Inc. to the Global Alliance for
Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI). Training programs will use World
Health Organization (WHO) and other internationally available source
materials in curriculum development. Funding will be at a maximum of
US$ 200,000 per year.
In subsequent years, MVN-A grant awardees and their affiliated insti-
tutions may be encouraged to apply for supplemental funding to con-
duct vaccine related disease burden and other epidemiological re-
search with particular importance for vaccines of the future in Af-
rica. This latter effort will assist in laying the groundwork for
sustaining the global objective of immunizations as the most cost-
effective approach in disease prevention.
Eligibility requires that MVN-A applicants have existing affiliations
in infectious diseases with institutions in GAVI eligible countries
in Africa ("collaborative partnerships") and have demonstrated suc-
cess in competing for peer reviewed and funded projects.
