Nelson Mandela/HSRC Study on HIV/AIDS
-------------------------------------
The first nationally representative study of HIV prevalence has found
that 11.4% of South Africans, 4.5 million people, are living with
HIV/AIDS.
The study drew on a sample of 9,963 people countrywide, and includes
anonymous saliva-based HIV tests from 8,840 participants. Partici-
pants also answered a comprehensive questionnaire on behaviour, com-
munication, socio-economic and socio-cultural aspects of HIV/AIDS.
The study, commissioned by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Nel-
son Mandela Children's Fund, was conducted by the Human Sciences Re-
search Council (HSRC) in collaboration with the Medical Research
Council (MRC) and the Centre for AIDS Development, Research and
Evaluation (CADRE).
"This study marks a watershed in our fight against HIV/AIDS", said
Mr. Nelson Mandela. "I am proud to say we now have the data to tackle
the epidemic more vigorously."
